Roser Grabs 1,000th Career Rebound, Sets Single-Game Scoring Mark

MARCY, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) tallied the 1,000th rebound of her career and set the single-game program record for points scored (39) as the Wells College women's basketball team was defeated by the Wildcats of SUNYIT by a 92-88 overtime score Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Gym. With the loss, the Express even their overall record at 12-12 and fall to 11-5 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats improve to 12-8 overall on the season and to 10-4 within league play.

Entering today's contest with 990 career rebounds, Roser secured an offensive rebound with 8:32 remaining in the first half to grant her 1,000 career boards. In addition, Roser scored 39 total points in this afternoon's loss to the Wildcats, setting a single-game program record. The previous record of 33 points was set by Roser on Jan. 22, 2011 against the Wildcats of Cazenovia College. Her 27 rebounds also place her second all-time in individual game history, trailing her own all-time record of 31 rebounds, set against Penn St.-Berks on Feb. 13, 2011.

From the charity stripe, Roser also set a program record for the most successful free throws without a miss with 13 successful foul shots. Roser also had the previous program record high, shooting 9-for-9 from the free throw line against St. Elizabeth on Jan. 9, 2011. Collectively as a team, the 88 points scored is a program record mark, eclipsing their previous high of 85 points scored against Penn St.-Harrisburg on Jan. 12 of this year.

In the game, Roser's 39 points led the way for the Express as she poured home 13 field goals in addition to her 13 successful free throws. Freshman Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) ranked second on the team with 15 total points, pouring home her team's lone three-point basket while also securing six field goals, six blocks and four steals for the Express. Freshman Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) secured 13 total points, shooting 6-for-18 while sophomore Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Wells, notching 12 points.

Despite trailing at the half by eight points, 40-32, the Wildcats were able to increase their lead to a game-high 16 points with 8:22 remaining in regulation. The Express, however, turned the tables on the home team, scoring eight straight points to cut the deficit to eight points, 65-57, with 7:21 remaining in the half. The Wildcats reestablished a seven point lead, 70-63, with 5:27 remaining in regulation when the Express went on another run to tie the score at 70 aside with 3:12 remaining.

During that game-tying run, Roser scored all nine points for the Express, utilizing three jumpers and three foul shots to tie the game. With 1:18 remaining in regulation, Abbey Hanahan buried both free throws following a foul on junior Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) to capture a 78-76 lead. The Wildcats, who successfully rebounded a Roser jumper with 1:07 remaining, missed their next two shots, setting up Achzet to bury the game-tying layup with only 16 seconds remaining in regulation. SUNYIT's Kayla McNeil missed a jumper with three seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Express never possessed the lead as the home team was 3-for-3 from the field and buried 8-of-10 free throws in the extra stanza. The Express, who were 4-for-7 from the field in the extra time, cut the deficit to one point with 41 seconds remaining in the overtime period following a Roser layup. However, two Express fouls sent the Wildcats to the line where Hanahan went 1-for-2 down the stretch and McNeil buried both free throws with two seconds remaining to secure the victory.

Hanahan finished with 30 total points for the Wildcats, shooting 11-for-17 from the field and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. Reigning NEAC Player of the Year Lyndsey Brognano was a team-best 3-for-8 from three-point range, chipping in 24 points for SUNYIT in the win. McNeil posted five blocks and four assists while Hanahan assisted seven Wildcat field goals in the victory.

Wells scored 58 points in the paint as opposed to SUNYIT's 44 points in the lane. In addition to scoring 21 points off of SUNYIT turnovers, the Express outscored their hosts 30-to-6 in second chance opportunities.

The Express return to action Saturday, Feb. 16 as they host the Storm of Keuka College in a 1:00 p.m. contest. Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.), the lone senior student-athlete on the roster for the Express, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
