Comeback Victory For Women's Basketball At Cobleskill

The Wells College women's basketball team rallied in the second half and then held off a late comeback surge from SUNY Cobleskill as the Express picked up a 56-55 victory on the road Sunday, Dec. 4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference action. Wells improved to 3-2 on the season and stands 2-1 in the NEAC. Cobleskill is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Ashida Cooper led Wells with 18 points. Jenna Herd had 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of action and added eight points. Carley Ryan was the other Wells player to score in double-figures with 12 points.

Wells trailed 24-19 at halftime and then fell behind by seven points when the Fighting Tigers scored the first basket of the second half. Wells went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 31-28 lead. The game was tied 33-33 late in the third quarter, and Wells closed the third quarter with two baskets from Cooper and then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to build its largest lead at 45-33.

A 3-pointer from Dallia Rorick gave Wells an 11-point lead with 5:55 remaining, but Cobleskill fought back with a run of its own and took a 55-54 lead with less than two minutes left. On the next two possessions for Wells, Cooper was fouled and converted one free throw each time to put Wells ahead 56-55 in the final minute. Cobleskill missed its last two field-goal attempts and Wells earned the one-point victory.

Wells outscored Cobleskill 18-9 in the third quarter. Through five games this season, Wells has outscored its opponent in the third quarter three times, was tied once, and had a one-point deficit once. For the season, the Express holds a 29-point advantage over opponents in the third quarter.

Wells will close the first-semester portion of its schedule this week with non-conference road games Tuesday at Ithaca College and Thursday at Nazareth College.
