Women’s Basketball Downs Penn St.-Abington, 60-47

ABINGTON, Pa. – Three different members of the Wells College women's basketball team reached double-digit scoring en route to a 60-47 victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Wells improves to 6-5 overall on the year and to 3-1 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Nittany Lions fall to 2-7 overall on the year while remaining winless (0-4) in league play.

Senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) racked up a team-leading 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Express in the victory. She also posted seven steals, a career-high mark that falls only one shy of the all-time team record. Cumulatively, Wells racked up 15 steals against the Nittany Lions, the third-highest single game total in team history.

Junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) posted her second double-double in as many games, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 boards in the win. Her six blocks led both teams in that category. Senior Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored a season-high 12 points for Wells while classmate Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) led the team with three assists.

Penn St.-Abington used an 8-0 run in the game's opening half to take a 13-8 lead with 12:23 left in the stanza. Wells, however, utilized back-to-back foul shots by freshman Anita Babb (Auburn, N.Y.) and a layup by Hernandez to cut the deficit to one. Knapp converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup to knot the score at 15 aside just near the midway point of the half.

In the game's next five minutes, only four points would be scored. With the game tied at 18 apiece with 4:55 left in the first half following a Breanna Lineman jumper, Wells went on an 8-0 run to create an eight point lead with only 1:08 remaining in the half. Roser countered a layup by Jessica Schmidt in the game's waning seconds with two free throws, maintaining her team's eight point lead at the half.

Wells did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest, maintaining at least an eight point lead in the game's final 20 minutes. Penn St.-Abington shot a combined 5-for-17 from the foul line while the Express buried 23-of-30 shots from the charity stripe.

Penn St.-Abington was led by Teharah Worrell's 12 points. Janay Winston and Schmidt each tallied 10 points for the Nittany Lions in the losing effort. Stephanie Keyes recorded five takeaways while Lineman posted 10 rebounds for the hosts.

Wells returns to action this Monday, Jan. 13 as they host Penn College at 7:00 p.m. in the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. The next day on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Express host the Pioneers of Alfred State College in a 5:00 p.m. tilt.
