'On This Day' First-Year Women’s Basketball Team Starts 2011 with NEAC Win

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Jan. 8, ten years ago in 2011.

Aurora, N.Y. ─ Ashley Roser poured in a game high 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Wells College women's basketball team opened the second half of their season with a 47-41 home victory over the Wilson College Phoenix in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Saturday evening, Jan. 8, 2011.

Kelly Cornwell added six points and four rebounds, Kristen Ryan chipped in with five points and seven rebounds, while Paige Stone and Rachel Mattraw each finished with five points to round out the scoring for Wells.

The Express jumped out to an 11-0 lead and wasn't until 10:50 of the first half that the Phoenix would get on the board. Wells continued to control the pace of the game leading by as many as 12 in the half, but the Phoenix would close with a short run, trimming the lead to 25-18 heading into the break.

The Phoenix picked up right where they left off in the first half, going on a 10-2 run to open the second half, taking their first lead of the game 28-27 with 11:57 remaining.

Tied at 31-31, the Express went on an 8-0 run to open up the game while clutch free throws by Stone and Roser with less than four minutes remaining would put the game out of reach for the Phoenix as Wells held on for the conference victory.
