Women's Lacrosse Edged By Lancaster Bible, 14-13
AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored a career-high eight goals on Friday but it was not enough as the Wells College women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Lancaster Bible College by a 14-13 final score. Wells (0-7, 0-2 NEAC) remains in search of its first win of the year as Lancaster Bible (5-5, 1-2 NEAC) earned its first league victory of the season.
Maloney added an assist to go along with her eight goals, setting a career high with nine points on offense. Senior Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) added two goals while classmates Lexie Roberson (Lewisville, N.C.) and Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) added one tally apiece. Freshman Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.) also scored one goal for the Express.
Wells owned a 12-11 lead with 16:08 remaining in regulation time as a Roberson free position strike put the hosts in front. Lancaster Bible, however, countered with three-straight goals to take a lead that they would not relinquish. The Express used a Maloney free position strike with 5:24 to cut into the deficit, but the Chargers would win the ensuing draw and allow only one Wells shot through to the end of the game.
The Express led 3-1 through the game's first 6:16 as Jordan, Bartosz and Maloney scored in succession. Lancaster Bible would counter with five-straight goals and would ultimately build a 10-8 lead following an Alyssa Wesner free position goal with one second remaining on the scoreboard. In total, Wesner would strike for 10 goals on the afternoon for Lancaster Bible after firing a team-leading 23 shots in the tilt.
Down 11-8 with 28:16 remaining on the second half clock, Maloney scored three-straight goals for Wells to knot the score at 11 prior to Roberson's free position strike. The Express never trailed by more than three goals, despite being outshot in the game by a 42-to-25 margin and losing 21 of the game's 28 draw controls.
Wells did, however, control the ground game by boasting a 31-to-24 edge over Lancaster Bible on loose balls. The Express also committed one fewer turnover (27-to-26) than the Chargers.
Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) kept her team in the game throughout, turning aside a career-high 19 shots on goal that included a whopping 12 saves in the second half alone. Nicolette Statuti yielded 13 goals on 18 total shots faced, making five saves to pilot her team to the victory.
