Late Flurry Not Enough, Women’s Lacrosse Falls To SUNY Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – Despite three goals by the Express in the final 1:28 of the contest, the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 16-9 road loss to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-2 overall following the non-conference tilt while SUNY Canton, a Division III independent, evens their record at 2-2.

Trailing 16-6 entering the final two minutes of regulation time, senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) scored goals within 25 seconds of each other with the first coming with 1:28 remaining in the second half. Sophomore Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) added  an unassisted tally of her own with 49 seconds left, but the Express could not overcome their early deficit.

Through the game's first 28:56, the Kangaroos jumped out to a 7-2 lead as both Brooke Knight and Tressa Goolden recorded hat tricks before halftime. Sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) briefly tied the game at one apiece at the 26:56 mark, but SUNY Canton scored the game's next three goals. Bass tallied her first of the game with 19:08 remaining, but another three goal outburst set the Express back further in the contest.

Wells concluded the first half strong, utilizing goals from Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) and Tucker in the waning minutes. Gould, who scored her second collegiate goal in the game, was assisted by Juelle Dixson (New York, N.Y.), who picked up her first collegiate point on the play. Wells, who was a perfect 7-for-7 in clear attempts in the first half, generated only 11 shots while the hosts powered 18 shots.

To open play in the second half, SUNY Canton scored the half's first five goals to place the Express at arm's reach. Bass and Tucker scored back-to-back goals near the midway point of the half, but another four straight goal outburst by SUNY Canton placed the game out of reach for Wells.

Bass finished the game with four goals to her credit while Tucker added three of her own. Bass and Fargnoli each led the team with six ground balls while Fargnoli collected nine draw control. For the Kangaroos, three different players scored three goals – Keeley Rice led the way with four goals and three assists for seven points (4-3=7) while also gathering a team-best six ground balls. Robyn Carroll scored three goals off of the bench.

The Express return to action this Thursday, Mar. 28 as they travel to play Roberts Wesleyan in a 4:00 p.m. road contest.
