Women's Lacrosse Powers Past St. Elizabeth, 23-2
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's lacrosse team scored all 14 of the game's first half goals en route to a 23-2 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth Sunday afternoon at Higgins Stadium on the campus of Ithaca College. With the loss, Wells improves to 1-1 overall on the year and within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Saint Elizabeth falls to 0-4 on the year and to 0-3 against league opponents.
With 23 goals scored, the Express tied the single game program record for goal scoring. Wells previously scored 23 goals in a shutout victory over Wilson College on Apr. 18, 2009. The 21-point margin of victory was the second highest in program history behind the aforementioned contest against the Phoenix.
The Express scored the game's first 20 goals and never looked back from there. Senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored six of her team's 23 goals and added an assist for a team-best seven points (6-1=13). Fargnoli also led her team with three caused turnovers and 13 shots taken. Junior Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) scored five goals of her own while classmate Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored four goals and two assists for six points (4-2=6) while adding a team-best six draw controls.
Junior Alaina Kelahan (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and sophomore Jessica Burbank (Stamford, Conn.) each scored twice for the Express. Freshman Nadia Bennacer (Marcellus, N.Y.) and sophomore Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each scored their first collegiate goals in the game and sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) and junior Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) each scored single goals to help their team to victory.
The Express scored their 20th goal with 13:16 remaining in the second half, capturing a 20-0 lead. Saint Elizabeth saw a goal from Kassandra Ortiz with 12:08 remaining in the second half to put her team on the board. Wells ran off three-straight goals to open up a 23-1 lead before Kiana Cunningham scored the game's final goal with 3:07 remaining, accounting for the final score of 23-2.
Wells held decisive advantages in shots (46-to-12) and draw controls (22-to-5) while holding the edge in ground balls (27-to-25) and clear attempts (7-for-11/2-for-20). The Express also posted three free position shots while the Eagles were held goalless on three opportunities at the top of the fan.
Freshman Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) earned her first collegiate victory in goal for Wells, making seven saves for her team. Saint Elizabeth's Sarah Briant posted nine saves, five in the first half and four in the final 30 minutes of regulation time.
Wells returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 25 as they face-off against Houghton at 7 p.m. on the road.
