Women's Lacrosse Defeated By Wilkes, 21-5
ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) scored four of her team's five goals as the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 21-5 loss to Wilkes University on Tuesday at Higgins Stadium. Wells falls to 2-3 overall following the non-league tilt while Wilkes boosts its record to 8-1.
In addition to leading the team in goal scoring, Stokes also hauled in six draw controls. Junior Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) scored the other goal for her team while adding an assist to go along with four ground balls. Senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) recorded an assist for the Express while junior Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a monster game defensively for Wells, picking up seven ground balls while forcing four turnovers.
Wilkes built a 6-1 lead over Wells with only 4:54 expired in regulation time as Carley Smith either set up or scored each of her team's goals in that span. Stokes added two goals in the first half for Wells, but the Colonels built up a 16-3 lead heading into the half.
In the second half, Wilkes scored the half's first five goals to capture a 21-3 lead before Stokes countered with her fourth goal of the game. A free position goal by Gould with 1:08 left in the contest was the fifth goal of the afternoon for Wells.
Smith's strong game gave her five goals and six assists for 11 points (5-6=11). Madeleine Brownsey scored six goals and added an assist while Tori Kerr rattled off four goals. Defensively, Jessyca Held caused three Wells turnovers to lead her team.
Wilkes backstop Kellie Kalada earned her eighth win of the year, making three saves in 55-plus minutes of action before yielding to Heather Lorincz who allowed two goals on three shots. For Wells, freshman Quinn Doubet (Cortland, N.Y.) allowed 16 goals on 19 total shots. Sophomore Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) saw time in goal for Wells, making two saves on seven total shots.
The Express host North Eastern Athletic Conference rival Keuka next Wednesday, Apr. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
