Women's Lacrosse Picks Up 8-7 Road Victory Over Saint Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Paced by a three goal effort from freshman Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.), the Wells College women's lacrosse team took home an 8-7 road victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday. With their first road win of the year, Wells improves to 3-6 overall on the year while earning their third North Eastern Athletic Conference victory of the season. Saint Elizabeth dips to 1-9 overall and to 1-6 within the league.

In total, Stokes registered four points via three goals and an assist. Sophomores Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) each chipped in with two goals and an assist while junior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored one goal in the victory.

Gould scored the first goal of the game for Wells with only 2:46 expired on the clock. Nicole Rios countered for the Screaming Eagles, scoring with 15:19 left in the stanza to knot the score at one aside. Gould would score again less than one minute later before Dana Mortensen tied the score at two aside with 11:10 left in the opening half.

The Express captured the lead later in the opening half as Fargnoli and Stokes scored the game's next two goals at 8:38 and 6:48, respectively. Despite another goal from Mortensen with 17 seconds left, Wells won the ensuing draw control and Stokes carried the ball up the field to set up a Roberson goal with only three ticks left in the opening half. The goal elevated the Express to a 5-3 halftime lead.

Leading 6-4 with 3:51 expired in the second half, the Screaming Eagles saw back-to-back goals scored by Kelly O'Dell and Christina Rios to tie the score at six aside with 16:40 left in the game. Stokes was able to give her team the lead for good, scoring the game's next two goals to put her team up 8-6 with 5:23 left in regulation time.

Wells netminder Brooke Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) earned the complete game victory between the pipes, making five saves in the win. Sarah Briant was saddled with the loss, allowing eight goals while making as many saves across the 60 minute game.

The Express return to action this Tuesday, Apr. 11 as they face-off against the Storm of Keuka College at 7:00 p.m. under the lights on the road.
