Heterbring To Lead Wells Field Hockey, Women’s Lacrosse

AURORA, N.Y. – Wells College has hired Katrina Heterbring as the Head Coach of field hockey and women’s lacrosse, Acting Athletic Director Dan Kane announced on Tuesday. She joins the Express from NCAA Division II Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. where she served as the Assistant Field Hockey Coach for the Wolves.

At Newberry, Heterbring assisted the squad with their debut as a varsity program during the 2013 season. The Wolves played a highly-competitive schedule in their first season, facing-off against numerous nationally-ranked programs en route to an ECAC Division II Invitational Tournament berth. Heterbring also coached two Independent Schools Alliance All-Conference players, including the league’s Rookie of the Year.

“I am beyond excited to have this opportunity to work in such a strong, supportive athletic department,” remarked Heterbring, who hails from Java Center, N.Y. “I am committed to continuing the success and growth of both programs. As a native to the area, I am looking forward to using my knowledge of the area to recruit academically and athletically focused student-athletes. The potential for both teams is endless and I cannot wait to get started.”

A natural leader, she will have a positive impact on our student-athletes playing field hockey and women’s lacrosse.”

Prior to joining Newberry, Heterbring served as a Graduate Assistant for the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams at Elmira College from 2011 to 2013. With Heterbring’s assistance, the Soaring Eagles’ field hockey squad dramatically improved their overall record and earned placement on the NCAA’s “Most Improved Team” list in 2013.

Across her two-year tenure with the field hockey team, nine players earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad recognition and four student-athletes were named to Empire 8 Conference All-League teams. Additionally, Heterbring’s one-year stint with the women’s lacrosse team in 2012 saw Elmira post its best record in six years.

Heterbring also drew extensive coaching experience this past summer, serving as an assistant field hockey coach for USA Athletes International. The non-profit organization provided amateur athletes the opportunity to compete in International Olympic-style sporting events. Heterbring’s team, of which she was responsible for recruiting student-athletes and post-graduates, competed against numerous club teams throughout Scotland.

A 2011 graduate of American International College in Springfield, Mass., Heterbring was a four-year member of the field hockey team and played women’s lacrosse during her tenure with the Yellow Jackets. Heterbring graduated as the program’s record holder in career minutes played (5,390) and defensive saves (20), earning a selection to the NFHCA North-South Division II All-Star Game.

A two-year captain, Heterbring helped to lead the field hockey team to the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs in 2010 and made an NCAA Division II Championship Tournament appearance. As a member of the starting defensive unit for the women’s lacrosse team in 2008, Heterbring saw action in all 16 games for American International.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from American International, Heterbring went on to earn a master’s degree in General Management from Elmira in 2013. Her sister, Amanda, is a 2009 graduate of Wells and was a four-year member of the women’s soccer team.

Heterbring replaces Kylie Hrehor, who recently accepted a position at Bethany (W.V.) College.
