AURORA, N.Y. – Despite outshooting their opponent in the contest, the Wells College field hockey team posted a 1-0 overtime loss to the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College on Tuesday at the Athletic Association Field. With the loss, Wells dips to 0-8 while Elmira (1-5) collects their first win of the 2014 season.
In the 83rd minute, Sarah McCaffrey of the Soaring Eagles sent a cross from the right half of the circle to the top of the left half of the circle. Taking two strides forward, Elmira's Alli Gilbert ripped a shot that just snuck inside the right post for the game-winning goal. Gilbert's strike came on Elmira's ninth shot of the overtime period as the Soaring Eagles held the 9-to-6 overtime advantage in that statistic.
Cumulatively in the game, the Express outshot their opponent by a 17-to-16 margin and also held the 7-to-3 edge in penalty corners. Wells saw six different players fire a shot, including a team-leading four shots on goal from senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.).
Wells backstop Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) dropped her eighth loss of the year, turning aside six-of-seven shots on net in the contest. Julie Hockenberger halted all eight shots on goal that she faced in 83:29 of action.
