MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Despite goals from three different players, the Wells College field hockey team posted a 5-3 road loss to the Mustangs of Morrisville State College on Sunday at Drake Field. With the loss, Wells dips to 0-4 on the young season while Morrisville State (1-1) collects their first victory of the year.
Wells opened the scoring at 3:49 of the first period as freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) forced home a rebound off of the Morrisville State goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal. The host Mustangs, however, countered with four-straight goals, including three from Alyssa Bassett in the first half alone. The Express had their chances offensively in the opening 35 minutes, receiving seven total penalty corners while holding the host Mustangs without a penalty corner opportunity.
Trailing by a 4-1 margin at the half, Wells opened the second stanza with a goal from junior Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) at 42:52. Freshman Nicole Sales (Woodbury, Conn.) crossed a ball to the left post that was tipped home by Bastian to cut into the deficit. Six minutes later, Courtney Lee of the Mustangs reestablished a healthy lead for the hosts after firing home a one-timer past the Wells keeper.
Senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) added Wells' third goal of the contest with 26 seconds left in regulation time, but the Mustangs were able to hold the Express at arm's length for the remainder of the tilt.
Wells backstop Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) made three saves against the Mustangs. Meaghan Mack picked up the victory in goal for Morrisville State, turning aside six-of-nine shots on net.
The Express return to action Wednesday, Sept. 10 as they face-off against Nazareth in a 7 p.m. road contest. Wells hosts St. Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. in the team's home opener.
