"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 17
Baseball: April 17, 2017
The Wells College baseball team extended its winning streak to four games after sweeping a doubleheader against Medaille College on Monday, April 17 in games played at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. Wells won the first game 20-7 and took the second game 6-4.
Wells 20, Medaille 7
Wells scored eight runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth to help a 20-run outburst. It was the highest single-game run total of the season and the Express totaled 20 hits in the game.
Justin Forster had four hits including a double and a triple. He had one RBI and scored three times. Six other players had multi-hit games including three hits from Anthony Aumick and Tanner Dunkel. A.J. Nesci, Dylan Nolan, Brandon Shirley, and Mike Diehr had two hits each. Every hitter in the starting lineup had at least one hit.
Zach Kemp pitched four innings and got the win. Garrett Gagnon earned his first save of the season with three innings in relief.
Wells 6, Medaille 4
Wells scored twice in the first inning and added single runs in the second and third to build a 4-2 lead. Medaille tied the score in the top of the fifth, but Wells responded with the decisive runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nolan doubled in the fifth to advance Anthony Aumick to third, and an error by the catcher allowed Aumick to score and Nolan to move to third. Mike Diehr singled to drive in Nolan with the sixth run.
Brandon Shirley pitched four and two-thirds innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs with nine strikeouts. Christian Jorden finished the fifth and pitched the sixth to earn the win. Jared Bieber pitched a perfect seventh with one strikeout to get the save.
Nesci and Justin Forster had two hits each. Nolan and Shirley had doubles. Mike Diehr drove in three runs.
