The Wells College softball team cracked the win column for the first time in the 2017 season with a 6-5 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8. Cobleskill came back to win the second game 12-11 in eight innings as the teams split a North Eastern Athletic Conference two-game set.
Wells is 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the NEAC. SUNY Cobleskill is 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Express hosts SUNY Poly for two games on Sunday, April 9 beginning at noon.
Wells 6, Cobleskill 5
The Express used a four-run rally in the top of the seventh to spark its win. Wells trailed 3-2 going to the final inning, but scored four runs on three hits. Sydney Cullen had an RBI hit, Baylee Pearce doubled in a run and Jessica Conover had a sacrifice fly to bring in the third run. Autumn McLain capped the rally by reaching on an error that allowed Pearce to score.
Cobleskill fought back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs, but Wells closed out the victory.
Naomi Kubo had a double and a triple with two runs scored. Cullen had three hits with two RBIs and a run. Baylee Pearce also had two hits.
Kubo earned the pitching victory with seven effective innings in the circle. She had 10 strikeouts and issued four walks with 10 hits.
Cobleskill 12, Wells 11 (8 innings)
A back-and-forth game saw the lead change five times. Cobleskill broke out with four runs in the bottom of the first, but Wells took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth. Cobleskill tied it 6-6, and Wells went ahead 8-6 in the top of the sixth. The Fighting Tigers scored three in the bottom of the sixth to take a one-run lead to the final inning, but Wells tied it with a run in the seventh.
The international tiebreak was used in the eighth inning. Wells scored twice to lead 11-9, but Cobleskill scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to take the victory and earn a split of the doubleheader.
Wells scored its 11 runs on 11 hits. Sydney Cullen hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and drove in three runs in the game with three runs scored on a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Clara DiMino had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three times. Baylee Pearce and Dallia Rorick had two hits each.
Jessica Conover started in the circle and had one strikeout in five innings. Baylee Pearce pitched the final two-plus innings.
