Record-Setting Night For Milliken In Men's Lacrosse Victory
The Wells College men's lacrosse team went on the road and exploded for 16 goals in a 16-11 victory at Houghton College on Tuesday, March 7 at Burke Field in Houghton, N.Y. Houghton scored the first five goals of the game in the first quarter, but Wells responded by scoring 14 goals in a row.
Seven different players scored for Wells, led by a seven-goal performance from senior attackman Alex Milliken. With those seven goals, Milliken has totaled 109 goals in his Wells career, and is the program's leader in career goals, surpassing the mark of 106 goals held by Daniel Munsell '13.
Alex Milliken's seven-goal performance was the second-highest scoring day of his career, following a nine-goal, three-assist outing in his collegiate debut, a 23-1 win over Green Mountain College on March 8, 2014. In the season-opening game against Alfred State, Milliken became the second player in program history to reach the 100-career goals mark.
The Express trailed 5-3 after the first quarter, but outscored Houghton 11-0 over the second and third quarters to take control. The Highlanders made a push in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the nine-goal deficit.
The Wells rally started in the first quarter as Alex Milliken scored twice and Jordan Milliken scored with one second remaining in the quarter. Six second-quarter goals came from Alex Milliken (2), Tanner Mingen (2), Aaron Heisey, and Brady Hoose.
The onslaught continued in the third as Alex Milliken added three more goals and Brian Buttner and Ian Domon scored once each.
Wells goalkeeper Nick Hallinan made 15 saves. Heisey had a team-high 12 ground balls. Jordan Milliken finished with two goals and three assists.
The Wells defense helped force Houghton into 20 turnovers in the game, and the Highlanders were successful on just 11 of 18 clearing attempts.
The Express returns to action Saturday, March 11, with a 1 p.m. home game against SUNY Canton at the Wells Turf Field.
