Men's Lacrosse Nets Senior Day Victory vs. SUNY Cobleskill

AURORA, N.Y. – Seniors Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) and Michael Flaherty (Rochester, N.Y.) concluded their careers with the Wells College men's lacrosse team in style, filling the stat sheet in Saturday's 11-9 victory over SUNY Cobleskill. 

Wells wraps up its ninth season as a varsity program with a 3-11 overall record and a program-record 2-6 mark within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The team finished with the second-most points on offense scored in a single season (115-56=171), helping the Express to post two conference wins for the first time in team history. 

Jansen, a four-year member of the team, scored a team-leading five goals and two assists for seven points (5-2=7). His first goal of the game, scored only 5:30 into regulation time, was the 100th of his career as he finishes with 104 goals and 56 assists for 160 career points (104-56=160), the team's all-time leader. 

Flaherty, who joined the team as a freshman in 2013, secured a team-leading six ground balls and racked up four caused turnovers, also leading the team. He graduates this spring as the team's unofficial leader in minutes played (2,908) and his 52 games played ties the all-time program record. His 61 career caused turnovers is the second-most all time. 

Junior Alex Milliken (Hilton, N.Y.) also had a standout day for the Express, scoring three goals and three assists for six points (3-3=6) to reach 150 career points. He enters his senior campaign with Wells in 2017, needing only one more goal to collect the 100th of his career. His 150 points, scored off of 99 goals and 51 assists, is second all-time only to Jansen. 

Sophomore Aaron Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), classmate Tanner Mingen (Houston, Texas) and junior Cody Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added goals for the Express on Saturday, rounding out the team's scoring. 

Wells opened the game on a 4-0 scoring run, taking that lead into the second quarter of action. Each team traded two second quarter goals as Wells was able to maintain a four-goal advantage at halftime, 6-2. The Express held distinct advantages in first-half shots (29-to-12) while committing only four turnovers. 

SUNY Cobleskill would not go down without a fight in the second half, scoring five-straight goals in the third quarter to capture a 7-6 advantage with only two seconds left in the stanza. Wells began the fourth quarter with four-straight goals, taking a three-goal lead following Milliken's third goal of the game at 6:06. 

Kyle Magdziuk potted back-to-back goals within a minute, shrinking the Wells lead to 10-9 with 3:27 left, but Roberson scored his first goal of the game with 2:05 remaining to recreate a two-goal cushion. Immediately following Roberson's goal, Heisey won the face-off and Wells maintained possession throughout the remainder of regulation time. 

Wells goalkeeper Elijah Tracey (Utica, N.Y.) stood tall for his team, making 11 saves to earn his second win of the year. John Montainiz made 19 saves for the Fighting Tigers, drawing his 11th loss after yielding all 11 goals against Wells. 

The Express finished with statistical advantages in shots taken (54-to-31), ground balls (32-to-28) and successful clears (18-to-12) while committing a season-low 10 turnovers on the afternoon. 

Alex Acompora registered a team-best four points, scoring one goal and adding three assists (1-3=4). Magdziuk reeled in eight ground balls, leading the way for the Fighting Tigers.
