AURORA, N.Y. – For the first time in the history of both programs, the Wells College men's and women's soccer teams have collected National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Awards, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon. The Team Academic Award recognizes college soccer programs who post a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in the 2014-15 academic year.
The men's soccer team at Wells, piloted by Head Coach Dan Kane, combined for a 3.05 grade-point average while the women's soccer program, directed by Head Coach Mara Primmer, finished with a 3.30 grade-point average. Both the men's and women's soccer teams at Wells were the only representatives from the North Eastern Athletic Conference on the exclusive lists.
Wells is one of only 219 colleges and universities nationwide to have both their men's and women's programs win the prestigious award.
"We are honored to have been recognized by the NSCAA with this distinguished academic award," remarked Director of Athletics Michael Lindberg. "Our men's and women's soccer teams exemplify the standards of Wells College and Division III athletics, those being excellence in the classroom, dedication to their sport and service to the community."
Last season, the men's soccer team boasted three NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention selections in Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.), Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.) and Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.). Cody Primmer '15, a team captain last year, captured Wells College Male Student-Athlete of the Year honors and graduated with a 3.155 cumulative grade-point average.
The women's soccer team boasted nine NEAC Scholar-Athletes in 2014-15, tying with the women's volleyball team for the most single-team selections. Eight student-athletes picked up Dean's List recognition last year while Shannon Blanford '15 picked up her second-career Capital One Academic All-District Award as a senior, becoming the first repeat selection in school history.
