The Wells College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory in the team's first game of the 2017 season. The Express scored once in each half and defeated SUNY Canton on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Wells Turf Field.
Wells opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Mackenzie Maloney controlled the ball in the left side of the penalty area, evaded a defender and curled a shot inside the right post to put the Express on the scoreboard.
SUNY Canton answered and tied the match 1-1 with a goal in the 41st minute.
The game-winning goal came early in the second half as Wells built through the middle of the field, and Yanna Ososkalo made a quick pass behind the Canton defense to send Madison Beriman clear into the penalty area. Beriman's shot went over the goalkeeper's head, and into the goal off the bottom side of the crossbar.
Wells held on to its advantage, as goalkeeper Quinn Doubet made 10 saves in the match to earn the victory. She made two excellent saves on low shots headed toward the corner of the net, including one in the final minute of the contest.
Wells is back in action Sunday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. with a road game at The Sage Colleges.
