BENNINGTON, Vt. – Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) and Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) each scored two goals as the Wells College women's soccer team rolled past the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Bennington, Vt. Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont, N.Y./Lyme Central) earned her second straight victory in net finishing with two saves. With the victory the Express improve to 2-1 on the season while the Mountaineers fall to 1-1.
Stone, who has now scored four goals in her last two games, started the scoring for the Express blasting home a pass from Kasia Jandura-Cessna (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) for a 1-0 lead at 21:29 of the first half. Blanford followed with an unassisted tally at 39:49 and again at 58:53 to give Wells a commanding 3-0 lead. Stone put the finishing touches on an impressive game for the Express finding the back of the net on a pass from Blanford (2g, 1a) for the game's final score of 4-0 at 62:37.
Wells outshot the Mountaineers 30-5 and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The Express return to action this coming Wednesday against Hilbert College at 5 p.m. in Hamburg, N.Y.
