2021 Wells Express Field Hockey Season Recap
The Wells Express field hockey team wrapped up their season over the weekend. Even though it may not have turned out exactly how the team was hoping, there were still many things worth recognizing.
"We worked hard on and off the field since the pandemic hit in anticipation for this season and I am happy with the growth we've made on the field while still keeping academics as a priority. " Coach Jessica Galatioto
The Express only had 2 returners from their 2019 season which meant a young squad was going to do a lot of the heavy lifting for this Express team. They first took the field back on September 1st as they hosted SUNY Geneseo on the turf and quickly followed that up with a visit to SUNY Oswego later in the week. The young Express squad was met in both games by some strong competition and it set the tone for the season where they knew they were going to have to work harder than they ever had to grow and compete. September came to a close and the Express carried a 0-7 record with them to October. Their schedule didn't get any easier moving forward, however on Sunday, October 17th the Express saw an opportunity and seized the moment. They were hosting Medaille on the turf in what was senior night for the Wells Express. Near the end of the 1st quarter, the Express were able to snag a small lead of 1-0 thanks to a goal from Hannah Koerner (Lauren Spiegel). Medaille wouldn't go away quietly though and answered with 2 goals of their own giving themselves a 2-1 lead in the 4th quarter. In the 59th minute, however, Lauren Spiegel scored for the Express which sent the game to overtime. Finally, in the 65th minute, once again Lauren Spiegel was able to score the game-winning goal for the Express giving them their first win since 2018. The Express finished with a regular-season record of 1-12. "This team will always be special to me giving me my first head coaching win, but we are excited to work hard in the off-season and continue to build next fall." Coach Jessica Galatioto.
Samya Anderson-Victor, who was in goal for the Express during all 13 games, totaled 199 saves in the season! This was enough to earn her the rank of #5 nationally in the NCAA Division III for saves per game. Lauren Spiegel was another bright spot for the Express. As a first-year student-athlete, she leads the team in goals and points on the season. Also, Danielle Radivoy leads the Express in defensive saves in her senior year. Sophomore Clara Lima unfortunately was injured halfway through the season and was not able to finish the year. She was missed on the field but became the Express' biggest supporter from the sidelines always bringing positivity. As they do every year, the Express field hockey team worked hard to raise money for breast cancer awareness month. Wells College is played in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year, the Express was raising funds to support the Susan G Komen Foundation of Upstate New York. Donations have been made through their GoFundMe page, as well as different initiatives on campus including selling pink sprinkles at The Grind and giving bracelets with a $2 donation. 100% of the proceeds were donated to the cause.
Congratulations to all involved with The Wells Express field hockey on completing their first full season since 2019!
