Last-inning Victory For Elmira Over Wells Baseball
The Wells College baseball team was edged by a 3-2 score on Wednesday, April 5 in a road game at Dunn Field in Elmira, N.Y. Wells scored a game-tying run in the top of the ninth inning, but the Soaring Eagles scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Elmira took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Wells got on the board in the top of the sixth when Justin Forster doubled and later scored on a wild pitch. The Express tied it in the ninth on another wild pitch, Dylan Nolan came in to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Elmira's Dylan Bellinger came through with a game-winning single up the middle, his third hit of the game.
Wells had hits from Brandon Shirley, Forster, and Tanner Dunkel.
Aaron Wintermute started and allowed two runs on four hits in two innings. Jared Strait pitched three strong innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts. Christian Jorden pitched two shutout innings and Greyson Avots took the loss in 1.2 innings of work with two strikeouts.
Wells is 4-12 on the season and Elmira improved to 6-7. The Express returns home Saturday, April 8 for a doubleheader against SUNY Polytechnic Institute beginning at 1 p.m.
