NEAC Awards For Two Baseball Standouts
Two members of the Wells College baseball team were recognized as North Eastern Athletic Conference student-athletes of the week for their performances during the week ending March 26, 2017. Brandon Shirley was the Baseball Player of the Week and Jared Strait was the Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Wells went 2-3 over five home games during the week.
Brandon Shirley posted a .500 batting average in five games. The rookie first baseman went 8-for-16 with four runs scored, five doubles, one home run and nine RBIs. Shirley also drew three walks and swiped two bases over the weekend. His two-run home run on Mar. 25 helped Wells top Hilbert, 7-2, to earn the first victory in program history. In addition to his work at the plate, he also took the mound for one game, allowing four hits in a no decision.
Jared Strait was the winning pitcher in the first victory for Wells as a varsity baseball program. The rookie pitcher tossed six innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts. Strait issued two walks while both runs in the 7-2 victory over Hilbert were unearned.
Wells will play a doubleheader Tuesday, March 28 at home against Elmira College beginning at 3 p.m. This weekend, Wells begins NEAC play with a Saturday doubleheader at home against Penn College, and on Sunday Wells hosts Utica College for two games.
