Wells Women's Soccer Victorious Over Penn State Abington
The Wells College women's soccer team got back into the win column with a 2-0 victory over visiting Penn State Abington on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Wells Turf Field.
Wells controlled possession, converted scoring chances and held Penn State Abington off the scoreboard in a solid victory. A strong wind from the south impacted the attacking teams in each half. Wells scored once in each half.
Kayleigh Hurley and the Wells defense kept a clean sheet to earn the shutout. It was the second shutout of the year for Wells and for Hurley, who made 11 saves in her fifth-career shutout.
The scoring started in the 24th minute. Following a corner kick from the left corner from Mackenzie Maloney, Carley Ryan trapped the ball down inside of the penalty area and played it back outside of the box. Autumn McLain stepped forward and slotted a low, hard shot with her left foot inside the left post. It was the first goal of the season for McLain and the fourth of her career.
Wells extended the lead in the second half. Carley Ryan sent a low, hard cross from the right side that was deflected by the Penn State Abington goalkeeper. Mackenzie Maloney collected the ball at the back post and scored from close range just three minutes into the second half. It was the team-leading sixth goal of the year for Maloney. Ryan picked up her second assist of the match and her team-best fourth assist of the year.
The Express is 2-10-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Penn State Abington is 3-7-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the NEAC.
Wells will continue NEAC play Saturday, Oct. 13 at the College of St. Elizabeth. Please note that a match originally scheduled for Oct. 8 at home against Ithaca College will not be played due to mutual agreement by both teams.
