Sowersby’s OT Winner Nets Ninth Win For Men’s Soccer

AURORA, N.Y. – Sophomore Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) scored a goal only 20 seconds into overtime as the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington on Sunday at the South Athletic Field. The win in extra time marks the first for the Express dating back to Sept. 19, 2012, a 1-0 victory against Alfred at home.

With the win, the Express pick up their ninth overall win of the year to set the all-time program record for single-season victories. Wells has now won eight of their last 10 games dating back to a 2-1 victory over Utica on Tuesday, Sept. 9 and boast a 5-2 record within North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Penn St.-Abington scored the first goal of the game at 34:53 as Robert Ziegler fired home a Juan Martinez shot that caromed off the post behind Wells backstop Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.). Wells was able to counter with a goal from sophomore J. Tyler Adams (Eastampton, N.J.), who scored his first of the season on the play after kicking home a cross from junior Nicholas Constantino (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) at 71:30.

The game-winning goal came only 20 seconds into overtime as junior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) tapped a ball to his left that caught the foot of Sowersby. Scoring his team-leading seventh goal on the play, Sowersby roofed the ball past Penn St.-Abington goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol to give his team the win.

Penn St.-Abington outshot the Express by a 12-to-10 margin in the contest while the visitors also held the 4-to-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Sciotti set a program record with his eighth victory, the most by any Wells goalkeeper in a single season, by turning aside six shots on net. Saint-Pol allowed two goals and made as many saves across 90:20 minutes of action.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Oct. 18 as they face-off against Cazenovia College on the road at 3 p.m.
