Wells Earns Its Highest-Ever NEAC President’s Cup Ranking
GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The Wells College
Department of Athletics has earned its highest-ever percentage
ranking in the North Eastern Athletic Conference President’s
Cup Standings during the 2012-13 season, the conference office
announced this past Wednesday at their annual retreat. Earning 66
out of a possible 118 points, Wells sports teams accounted for a
.5593 percentage, the most points earned since a sixth place
ranking after the 2009-10 athletic season (.5481).
The conference’s President’s Cup is awarded based on
each institution’s overall winning percentage from the past
academic year. This percentage is calculated through a points
system that takes into account each school’s finish in the
final regular season standings for each team sport and the
championship finish for each individual sport sponsored within the
NEAC.
“Our strong placement in the NEAC President’s Cup
standings is a testament to not only our dedicated
student-athletes, but our hard-working coaches and support
staff,” said Director of Athletics Michael
Borsz. “To consistently improve our performance on a
year-by-year basis while adding to our cadre of sports since
joining the NEAC is something that our entire campus community
should be very proud of. I am looking forward to seeing our
continued growth carry into next year.”
Since joining the NEAC prior to the 2007-08 academic year, Wells
has maintained or increased its placement in the President’s
Cup rankings in all but one year. The Express have also added at
least one NEAC sport prior to each athletic year with the exception
of the 2009-10 season. Additionally, Wells men’s teams placed
sixth overall in 2012-13 amongst their competitors, their highest
ranking (.5435) since joining the conference. Last season, the
Wells women placed fifth out of 13 total schools – this
season, the Express finished sixth overall in the league.
The Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Berks and Penn St.-Abington finished
first and second overall, respectively, in the President’s
Cup standings. Keuka placed third while the Wildcats of SUNY
Institute of Technology earned fourth place. Amongst the seven
private NEAC institutions, Wells placed second overall behind the
Storm of Keuka College.
To help boost the school’s ranking in the standings, the
men’s and women’s swimming programs earned NEAC
championships in 2012-13 while both the men’s and
women’s basketball teams earned postseason berths. The
men’s soccer team posted its best NEAC record since earning
varsity status prior to the 2007-08 season while women’s
tennis earned placement in the NEAC West championship match for the
second-consecutive season.
